Ketone Bodies Definition And How To Reach Ketosis

It is important to know what’s the meaning of Ketones, which is also known as “Ketone Bodies” they are the catalyst for the body to be in ketosis state.

What Are Ketones?

Ketones are produced when the carbohydrates intake is low. Leading to decrease the level of glucose to be insufficient, blood sugar and insulin become lower. The body starts to search for an alternative source of energy which is Fat.

The cases which lead to this result are when a person is fasting, after hard exercise, during starvation or following Low Carb Keto Diet.

When the body begins to burn fat for producing energy this is known as beta-oxidation which means the formation of ketones to provide the body and brain with energy. This is called Ketosis.

Benefits Of Being in Ketosis State:

Following a low carb diet helps the body to be in Ketosis State and it has lots of benefits like:

  • Helps people who suffer from high blood pressure, it improves their cholesterol levels.
  • It improves energy and performance levels.
  • Increase weight loss rates
  • To burn more stored fats
  • Rely less on carbohydrates to reach satisfaction.

Other than weight loss benefits of ketosis there are more functional benefits can be mentioned:

  • Improving mental performance which occurs when following Ketogenic diet as the brain uses ketones as energy for mental function.
  • Empowering your body while exercising. In common cases the body uses the last eaten food or the stored glycogen as energy during exercising but when both fuels are gone the body adapts itself to the ketogenic state of producing its fuel from protein or fat.

Testing Levels Of Ketone Bodies:

It’s useful while on ketogenic diet to know the ketones level in your body.

The excess ketones can be spilled over in different ways like showing up in the blood, urine or even in the smell of your breath.

Let’s first know the appropriate levels of ketones in the body:

Negative ketone level: less than 0.6 mmol

Low to moderate level: between 0.6 to 1.5 mmol

High ketone level: 1.6 to 3.0 mmol
Very high ketone level: greater than 3.0 mmol

Best Ways To Measure Ketone Bodies:

There are several ways to determine the levels of ketosis or ketones, you can get it done in a lab or use one of these quicker and more affordable alternatives:

-Urine testing

-Blood testing

-Breath testing

Measuring the levels of your ketones will help you to follow up with you ketosis level. If it’s lower than the required level, it means you need to increase your fat intake and reduce your carb intake during the day. And it’s the opposite if you find the levels of ketones is higher than required.
